Traditional night views of Amanohashidate
will be revived again this autumn.
On Sep. 29 (harvest moon), Sep. 30, Oct. 15 (new moon), and Oct. 29 (full moon), Motoise Kono Shrine and Okumiya Manai Shrine will be open for special nighttime visiting and illumination. Manai Shrine will be illuminated for the first time in its long history.
The full moon and the new moon have been believed to have a mysterious power called "musuhi" to create and develop all things in heaven and earth for years since ancient times, and the "Musuhi Pilgrimage" to Kono Shrine and Manai Shrine on these two days is said to increase the divine power of the gods.
*During the event, Motoise Kono Shrine grounds will be lit up on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.). (Manai Shrine will only be lit up on special nighttime visitation days.)
Special light up of Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park, the birthplace of "mata-nozoki" (viewing the land bridge from between your legs)! The cable car/lift line will also be brilliantly lit up, and visitors can walk around the observation area above the spectacle after taking the lift up. The entire "Night view of the gods" can be viewed from the observation deck. On special days, there will be special performances; traditional performing arts and short firework displays in Miyazu Bay.
Amanohashidate used to have a moon-viewing boat on the Aso Sea in the inner bay so people could view the moon. In addition to the Mid-Autumn and October full moons, the boat also operates as “a star gazing boat” on the evening of the new moon (15 October).
According to a legend, Amanohashidate is connected to the Dragon Palace, and sometimes a mysterious dragon-fire would appear from the sea, setting the Amanohashidate’s treetops ablaze. To recreate legendary phenomenon, the moon-viewing and star-viewing boats will use special lighting to bath Amanohashidate’s pine trees in light.

On 15th and 29th of Oct, there will be special sword swinging performances (“ejiri no tachifuri”), which is a Shinto ritual usually held in the Spring at Motoise Kono Shrine. And on Sept. 30th there will be a special lecture and taiko drum performance ("Uki-daiko"), another Shinto ritual performed at the Miyazu Festival in Spring. The performances will showcase the traditional performing arts of Miyazu and Amanohashidate that have been passed down through generations. Visitors can also watch performances of a Miyazu traditional dance (Miyazu Odori).
A total of 75 fireworks (lasting for about 5 minutes) will be launched into the autumn night sky on Sept 30, Oct. 15, and Oct. 29 (if it doesn’t rain). On Oct. 29th, fireworks will be held in three locations around Amanohashidate.
